Maintenance of dirt roads: what is the most effective method?

Cross of municipal administrations and delight of sportsmen and outdoor lovers, the roads white they are a constant feature of the local road system in all Italian regions. They travel through the rural areas of our country for dozens and dozens of kilometers, thus allowing you to move between plots of land, farms and small villages.

Given their nature - and the vehicles that usually pass through them - these small road arteries need constant maintenance. The weight of the tractors and other agricultural vehicles that travel along them every day causes the movement of the inert material they are made of and the rapid disintegration of the road surface. This causes, in the medium term, the formation of rather deep holes, which make the transit of cars and other small vehicles difficult - and dangerous.

Maintenance and reconstruction of dirt roads it thus becomes one of the most pressing problems for hundreds of local administrations throughout the country. There are many solutions for fixing bad dirt roads, but not all of them have the same level of effectiveness. Let's find out together what the best methods are for resurfacing dirt roads.

What are white roads

Before starting, however, it is useful to give a definition of dirt roads, so as to precisely outline the topic we are talking about. The dirt roads – protagonists of a historic cycling race in Tuscany – are unpaved country roads, covered with gravel or other inert material so as to avoid the formation of mud in the event of heavy rainfall.

Maintenance of dirt roads: the most effective methods

Among the various types of maintenance interventions for dirt roads and dirt roads, some prove to be more effective than others. These three methods make it possible to restore the deteriorated road surface and surface and make the road passable again in a matter of a few hours (or days at most).

  • Milling of the surface and road surface. One of the most common operations when a bumpy dirt road needs to be fixed. By milling the surface and the road surface it is possible to eliminate all the irregularities in the pavement such as holes, grooves and so on, to mix the inert material restoring the correct leveling of the road surface.
  • Stabilized earth flooring. By using special catalysts, it is possible to create durable floorings that are immediately ready for use in any context and in any situation. Stabilized earth flooring, in fact, allows you to create homogeneous surfaces with the use of inert material such as gravel or recycled aggregates from demolition. Characterized by a high degree of permeability, they are resistant to mechanical stress, thus reducing the need for ordinary and extraordinary maintenance.
  • Three-dimensional confinement and stabilization systems. Interventions of this type involve the use of a sort of mesh - made of plastic material - fixed to the ground with iron or wooden stakes. The mesh must then be filled with inert material of various kinds - also deriving from demolition recycling, for example - and compacted with a vibrating plate. The presence of the network fixed to the ground will prevent the road surface from being washed away in the event of heavy rain, thus improving the passability of the road even in adverse weather conditions.

The advantages of stabilized earth in the maintenance of dirt roads

Compared to the other two solutions, the use of stabilized earth for the resurfacing of dirt roads (and dirt roads in general) guarantees multiple advantages:

  • First of all, high wear resistance: the catalysts used to stabilize the rammed earth and the inert material, in fact, make the surface of the flooring particularly hard and resistant to mechanical stress. This will avoid the formation of potholes in the middle of the road and the disintegration of the surface, while at the same time reducing the need to periodically maintain the road.
  • The high degree of permeability, on the other hand, ensures that the water drains more easily, preventing the formation of water rivulets that deform the road surface. All this to the advantage of agricultural vehicles or cars that will find themselves traveling on the road during downpours: the absence of potholes and puddles will make the journey easier and safer.
  • Finally, stabilized land represents an eco-sustainable and environmentally friendly choice. The catalysts used do not release substances harmful to the environment and do not pollute the underlying aquifers. The flooring is therefore not classified as special waste and is therefore completely recyclable. Furthermore, the use of local aggregates allows us to reduce carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the transport of the material.

How to redo dirt roads with Nature Stabil Road products from Terra Solida Italia®

The product family Nature Stabil Road by Terra Solida Italia® It is among the most advanced solutions for the creation of solid and safe dirt roads. Using various types of aggregates (such as gravel or recycled aggregates from building demolitions), it allows you to create a draining, eco-sustainable and immediately practicable flooring with reduced thickness.

The use Nature Premix binder-consolidator allows you to redo dirt roads with low environmental impact. The flooring will not release pollutants into the environment and, once at the end of its life cycle, it can be completely recycled: it is not in fact considered special waste and does not require expensive disposal practices.

Added to this is the economic aspect. Using Terra Solida Italia® products it is possible to create a stabilized earth surface with low production and maintenance costs. In fact, a dirt road rebuilt with stabilized earth does not require the periodic transfer of material to cover potholes and does not generate dust or mud.
