In the heart of nature, a pavement that breathes with the forest
In the Serre Regional Park, immersed in the silence that surrounds the Certosa di Serra San Bruno, a project that combines technique and spirituality takes shape. The Frassati nature trail has been redeveloped with a stabilized granular mix pavement, solid like the rock from which it comes, but permeable and respectful of the environment. A solution by Terra Solida that demonstrates how technology can blend with the landscape, without affecting its soul.
The client
The project was born from the will of the Serre Regional Park, a naturalistic excellence of the Calabria Region, to enhance and preserve one of the most symbolic and evocative places in the territory: the Frassati nature trail, adjacent to the historic Charterhouse of Serra San Bruno. This path crosses an intimate and spiritual landscape, nestled in the woods at almost 900 meters above sea level. It is here that the power of silence, the weight of history and the pristine beauty of nature merge. For this reason, every design choice was guided by a profound respect for the identity of the place.
Description of the project
The intervention concerned the Redevelopment of the Frassati trail, a path that more than others encapsulates the profound essence of the journey: spiritual, natural, human. The trail winds through the heart of the Serre Regional Park, next to the centuries-old Certosa di Serra San Bruno, in an environment where every leaf tells of silence and every stone holds a memory. In a place as delicate as it is powerful, intervening means enter into dialogue with the landscape, do not overwhelm it. For this reason, the key word of the whole project was: compliance.
The main goal was to improve the practicability, stability and resistance of the route, while maintaining its intact natural and contemplative harmony. Not a makeover operation, but a real regeneration work, in which engineering meets ecological sensitivity. The design choice fell on a permeable paving in stabilized granular mix, a technical solution that responds to functional, environmental and aesthetic needs at the same time. The Terra Solida system was the protagonist: an approach that it doesn't just build, but regenerate what exists, enhancing it and strengthening its intrinsic qualities.
The distinctive element of the intervention is the use of materials present on site: in particular, thealterite derived from the granitic parent rock – a unique geological resource of the area – has been milled directly on site. This process has allowed us to transform a natural, apparently raw material into a high performance technical composite, capable of offering durability, stability and aesthetic coherence. An intervention that is done with what the place already offers, with a view to circularity, sustainability and low impact.
The result is a surface that surprises with its solidity and discretion. Compact like a natural slab, resistant like a stone work, but at the same time soft to the eye and friendly to the territory. The texture of the flooring, its earthy tones, soft irregularity of the finishes give back an image of continuity with the landscape, as if that path had always been there, shaped by time and not by the hand of man. It is a work that does not impose itself, but accompanies. It does not demand visibility, but allows itself to be discovered discreetly, one step after another.
Who walks the Frassati path today he doesn't have the perception of stepping on an artificial surface, but rather to cross a land that breathes, that drains water and that resists the elements without ever breaking the fragile balance of the environment.
This is the silent miracle of Solid Earth technology: making innovation invisible, but profoundly effective. A flooring that does not try to imitate nature, but to enter into symbiosis with it, following its rhythm, accepting its seasons, enduring its trials.
In this sense, the intervention in Serra San Bruno is not just a technical project. It is a cultural act, a declaration of love towards the landscape, towards the communities that inhabit it and towards the walkers who cross it. Terra Solida has demonstrated here that environmental engineering can also be poetry, and that every path can become a narrative in balance between what was and what will be.
Operating in such a delicate context required careful and respectful planning. Among the main requirements that guided the intervention:
- Resistance to freeze-thaw cycles, particularly intense given the altitude and humidity typical of the mountain area.
- High mechanical performance, to ensure long-lasting durability of the walkway, even in the presence of constant pedestrian traffic and changing weather conditions.
- Aesthetic and landscape integration, without compromise. The goal was to create a pavement that would appear to be an integral part of the territory, respecting its colors, morphology and materiality.
- Reduction of environmental impact: the entire process favored the use of local materials and on-site processing, limiting the transportation of aggregates and emissions as much as possible.
- Sustainability and reversibility: the technology used is completely eco-compatible and recyclable, guaranteeing total reversibility of the work in case of future needs.
The real value of this intervention lies in the ability to combine strength and lightness of impact, offering a walking experience that does not disturb the place, but enhances it.
Products used
To create the stabilized flooring, two key products from the Terra Solida range were used:
-
STABIL ROAD – Nature Premix. It is a natural and eco-friendly binder, designed to obtain maximum stabilization of the granular mixture. After an experimental phase conducted by the Terra Solida Technical Management, the binder proved to be ideal for the transformation of the local granite alterite in a high-performance, homogeneous surface that is perfectly suited to the climatic and environmental context.
-
STABILCURE. It is the maturing aid used to ensure correct maturation of the stabilized material. This product plays a fundamental role in the final surface stabilization, ensuring resistance, compactness and continuity over time, even in the presence of variable atmospheric conditions.
