How to make a road with stabilized material

Stabilized road

Unlike what you might imagine, the stabilized land it can be used in the most disparate works. Among these, one of the most appreciated by professionals (not only businesses, but also technicians and public administrations) is the possibility of make roads with stabilized material. This material, in fact, allows you to create homogeneous and safe surfaces even in areas that are difficult to reach, in full respect of the environment and the ecosystem.

In fact, stabilized earth has been used for construction works for some time maintenance of dirt roads in various locations in Italy. The advantages that this solution guarantees, in fact, are multiple: durability, eco-sustainability and low construction costs. We should not be surprised, therefore, if more and more often in many places the decision is made to make a road with the stabilized, rather than opting for other solutions (such as asphalt or gravel).

Stabilized earth roads: how to do it

The process of making one stabilized earth road it is not complex at all. Above all, the materials used and the techniques used make it possible to significantly reduce the construction times of the works: the paving made with the stabilized material can be walked on immediately, allowing public administrations to reopen vehicular traffic within a few days of starting the works.

However, how exactly do you build a road with stabilized material? A work, as mentioned, simpler than one might imagine. First of all, you need to prepare the material for the earthy background, which must guarantee permeability and, at the same time, compactness. On average, the thickness of this layer varies from 25 to 40 centimeters, based on the operating loads that it will have to bear once the road is opened. In the creation of this layer, it will be possible to use crushed stone, quarry material and recovered aggregates from demolitions.

Once the substrate has been compacted with the use of ad hoc mechanical means (such as a compacting roller) it will be possible to lay the Stabilized earth flooring. To achieve it, both a binder (such as lime or cement) and eco-compatible stabilizers must be mixed with the soils present in situ, the fine quarry stabilized or aggregates of various kinds and, above all, they will prevent the the establishment of erosion and degradation phenomena due both to the transit of vehicles and to the action of meteoric agents.

In this sector, the products of the line Nature Stabil Road by Terra Solida they are among the most appreciated by professionals and companies. These materials guarantee in fact high mechanical resistance and a high level of permeability: this allows us to create roads that are resistant over time and capable of respecting the ecosystem in which they are built.

First di spread stabilized earthy conglomerateHowever, it will be necessary to wet the earthy substrate: in this way the compacted material is prevented from drawing moisture from the upper layer, making it dry prematurely. Once the work of laying the stabilized earth has been completed, we move on to constipation of the mixture through the use of vibrating mechanical means. At this point it will be sufficient to wait a few days for the binder to set.

Road with stabilized material: the advantages

There are many reasons that push public administrations and private individuals to create solid earth road surfaces. This solution guarantees various operational, ecological and economic advantages compared to the alternatives available today (mainly, asphalt and gravel).

A stabilized earth road is eco friendly: either soil present on site or recovered aggregate from demolition is used in the construction. This means that the flooring is not considered a special material and can be 100% recycled. Furthermore, the stabilized does not release toxic substances into the soil and in the surrounding areas, further decreasing the environmental impact of this material.

Driving a road with stabilized material also guarantees a "life expectancy" that is on average longer than other solutions. L'high mechanical strength e the high level of permeability are two of the key characteristics of stabilized earth paving: this ensures that neither the transit of vehicles nor the action of rain and other atmospheric agents lead to the creation of holes or deformation of the surface.

An aspect that is anything but secondary also from the point of view economic. A more resistant road, in fact, allows maintenance costs to be reduced, significantly benefiting the coffers of the public administration or the pockets of the private citizen who has opted for this solution.

Road with stabilized: where

Stabilized earth is therefore a ductile and versatile material, which can be used in the most disparate situations. As already mentioned, a road can be made with stabilized material in the open countryside, instead of the old dirt roads that were as romantic as they were complex to maintain. This, however, is only one of the many uses of this material: the mechanical resistance and permeability mean that stabilized earth can be used inside parks (both public and private), green areas of agricultural or dairy companies and archaeological sites or protected areas subject to landscape constraint, historical and environmental (SCI, SPA, SAC areas).

Good morning, I have to make a road on sloping agricultural land to go up with a van and car and, if possible, the grass doesn't have to grow. What advice can you give me?

      • Francesco Cariddi says:

Good morning Sergio, the solution is to create the flooring using a stabilized quarry mix with grain size 0-20 or 0-30 and products from the Nature Stabil Road line. The flooring is perfect for a natural context like yours, eco-friendly, suitable for vehicles and resistant over time. I invite you to contact us by telephone or email to let us know where you intend to carry out the work. By doing this you will be able to discuss the details with one of our technicians. 7. Simone says:

Good morning, I used the stabilizer to make a driveway, but after a year I am invaded by weeds, what can I do?

    • Francesco Cariddi says:

Good morning Simone and thank you for your question. Well yes, stabilized mixtures simply spread and rolled certainly compact giving the illusion of stability but at the same time, if not expertly tied, they remain easily attacked by external factors such as atmospheric agents, grass, plants, etc. They are a quick and cheap solution, but unfortunately not long-lasting. Terra Solida has many solutions in this regard, therefore if you are interested in learning more about the topic, I invite you to call us so we can "pass" our local sales technician to you. See you soon!
