Reinforced lawn: what it is and what are its advantages

Lawn protection grid for outdoor car parks

Among the various solutions for make a lawn suitable for vehicles, that of the driveway lawn is in many ways the most immediate and economical. In fact, it allows you to create a homogeneous and regular surface, which allows the traffic of various types of vehicles (from bikes to cars, through work or transport vehicles) and, at the same time, not having to give up the green of the grass.

the aesthetic and environmental impact of urbanization works - such as access roads to protected areas, car parks or cycle paths - has a higher specific weight than other urban contexts. Exactly, however, what is a reinforced lawn and where can it be used? Above all, what are the advantages that this solution guarantees compared to alternatives? Let's find out together.

What is a reinforced lawn

When we talk about armed lawn (also called driveway lawn) we are referring to a solution that allows you to create a draining driveway surface within a lawn - be it within a private garden or in an area open to the public - without it being necessary to interrupt the continuity of the turf. As the name suggests, the reinforced lawn allows you to strengthen the ground and make the surface perfectly passable.

Compared to other solutions for outdoor draining surfaces, the reinforced lawn requires less invasive interventions, both from an environmental and environmental point of view. For example, unlike roads made of stabilized earth (another type of ecological paving, which is widely used both in suburban and rural environments, and within public parks and protected areas), the driveway lawn allows you to give continuity to green areas .

In this way the grass will be able to continue to grow without problems and, at the same time, cars and other vehicles will be able to pass without the danger of getting stuck in some deep hole or some deformation of the ground.

Uses of the reinforced lawn

The possible uses of driveable lawn (or armed, if you prefer) are the most varied. In fact, this particular technique can be used for realize draining driveways wherever you want and for any purpose. Lawn protection grids, for example, are widely used in the creation of parking areas within public parks or private gardens: the possibility of letting grass grow inside the honeycomb grids, in fact, allows you to obtain a excellent aesthetic effect even within rural and green areas.

Not only: high resistance to transit allows this solution to also be used to create avenues and driveways within protected areas, natural parks and archaeological areas. Likewise, the lawn protection grid is an ecological and economical solution for creating (in a relatively short time) long-lasting cycle paths.

How to make a reinforced lawn

There are two keys to creating a professionally armed lawn: a homogeneous and draining substrate, which allows the turf to grow lush and rainwater to drain correctly; and a honeycomb structure (called lawn protection grill) which gives solidity and robustness to the driveway surface. Made of plastic or concrete, the grid is filled with soil, inside which the grass can be sown and made to grow luxuriantly.

To make a driveway lawn it is necessary, first of all, to create one excavation approximately 15-20 centimeters deep: all the elements necessary to guarantee correct drainage and adequate stability of the entire structure will be inserted here. It will therefore be necessary to lay a layer of gravel and sand just over five centimeters thick to create a stable foundation with a high degree of permeability: in this way rain and irrigation water will not become stagnant and the turf will grow without problems.

Above this first layer you will then have to create a small layer of permeable soil suitable for "hosting" the roots of the grass: this is the base on which the plants will then have to rest. grills for the lawn and must be as compact and stable as possible. Once the leveling work has been completed, it will finally be possible to assemble the honeycomb structure: le plastic grills they are usually equipped with attachment systems that facilitate the installation of all the elements. The products of Garden Grid line by Terra Solida Italia, for example, use an exclusive "click" joint system, which allows the elements to be firmly joined together and, at the same time, allows for quick removal.

Once the grid is in place, you can proceed with filling the soil and subsequently sowing the grass. At this point all that remains is to water regularly and wait for your lawn to grow back more lush than ever.

Advantages of the reinforced lawn

Compared to other solutions for creating a draining driveway surface or create an external car park in the garden, the driveway lawn guarantees various advantages, both of a practical and technical nature.

As mentioned on several occasions, the use of lawn-saving grids such as those of Garden Grid line by Terra Solida Italia allow you to achieve less invasive interventions: the excavation will concern a limited area and, once the grass has grown, the driveway area will be indistinguishable from the rest of the turf. From an environmental and aesthetic point of view, therefore, the reinforced lawn is definitely preferable to the more "high-impact" alternatives.

Likewise, this intervention allows you to obtain savings both during installation and maintenance. It is, in fact, to all intents and purposes a lawn: to keep it in perfect shape it will be sufficient to water it regularly and cut the grass once it has become too long. Furthermore, the use of eco-compatible materials will allow the creation of ecological and environmentally friendly driveways. In summer, for example, the thermal effects that can be caused by the overheating of "closed" surfaces such as concrete or asphalt will not be created, to the benefit of the environment and people's well-being.
