Stabilized mixture: what it is, what it is used for, the advantages

Recycled aggregates

To realize road pavements – and otherwise – that are draining and have a low environmental impact, it is necessary to carefully choose the materials to be used on site. Even if for many it may represent a sort of obviousness, it is instead an essential starting point: only by choosing sustainable materialsIn fact, it is possible to obtain an ecological and eco-friendly road - or avenue. For this reason, know what stabilized mixture is and when to use it

What is stabilized mix and how is it produced

When we talk about stabilized mixed we are referring to a sustainable building material, of natural origin obtained from the selection of calcareous alluvial gravels, to which crushed stone can possibly be added. The mixture is produced through a three-phase manufacturing process, during which the calcareous material is first washed, then crushed and screened: in this way it is possible to obtain material with homogeneous grain size that can be used in the most disparate works.

Depending on the degree of purity, it is possible to distinguish between a first or second choice blend. If made only with material of natural origin then we are faced with 100% pure stabilized mix; if, however, it is "mixed" with inert materials from building demolition we find ourselves dealing with an "impure" and second choice mix.

Stabilized mixture: what it is for and uses

The stabilized mix is the "material of choice" for create draining foundations for road works of various kinds, from large arterial roads to country lanes, passing through pedestrian avenues, cycle paths and car parks. Its physical characteristics, in fact, make it particularly suitable for this use: it can be easily compacted and, at the same time, guarantee solidity and stability to the upper layers of the road pavement.

The uses of this material in the construction of road works can be multiple. The stabilized mix, for example, is fundamental for the creation of the draining substrate of the armed lawn. This particular paving allows you to create driveways and parking spaces within private gardens or within protected areas and public gardens without it being necessary to interrupt the continuity of the turf. In this case, the mixture is used to create a drainage layer a few centimeters thick, in direct contact with the ground, on which to lay the honeycomb structure (like that of the Garden Grid product line by Terra Solida Italia) which gives solidity and stability to the entire flooring.

Likewise, the stabilized quarry mix is fundamental for the construction of roads or squares stabilized land. In this case, even on two occasions: the mix is used to create both the draining substrate and the flooring itself. In fact, it must be mixed with inorganic binders, such as those of Nature Stabil Road line by Terra Solida Italia, to create a material that is easy to work with and, once solidified, characterized by high mechanical resistance and permeability performance.

Obviously, the stabilized mix can also be used in other road works, but the two just described have an undeniable advantage compared to those made with alternative materials such as cement or bitumen. Both the lawn protection grid and the stabilized earth they are two eco-friendly and sustainable solutions: they have a negligible impact on the environment and the ecosystem in which they are planted, they guarantee the correct flow of rainwater and can be disposed of and recycled without major problems.

The advantages of the stabilized mix

As we have seen previously, the stabilized mix is now very widely used in most road works. And understanding why is not too complex: this material, with an overall low cost, guarantees advantages that are now difficult to give up. Depending on the grain size, for example, the stabilized mix can be used both in the deeper layers of the road pavement and in the higher ones. In the first case you can use a mixture with larger grain sizes, while as you get closer to the surface it is advisable to use a mixture with smaller grain sizes. After appropriate compaction, in fact, this material has physical characteristics that allow it to create a compact and homogeneous layer.

Added to this is its natural origin, which makes it perfect for the creation of ecological road pavements. When used with other sustainable materials, road surfaces do not have to be disposed of as special waste, but they can be recycled and reused on other construction sites as aggregates from demolitions or excavations.
